The Northern Arizona football team announced its 2020 schedule on Monday highlighted by five home games in the Walkup Skydome this fall.
"We're excited to open the season with Arizona State and to host another team from the Missouri Valley Football Conference in our home opener," said head coach Chris Ball. "The 2020 season provides us a great opportunity to build upon the foundations set in our first year. We're looking forward to seeing our fans in full support in the Skydome for 2020 Lumberjack football."
The season will open on a Thursday night with the Lumberjacks in Tempe against Pac-12 foe Arizona State on Sept. 3. The Jacks and Sun Devils will square off for the first time at Sun Devil Stadium since 2016. Arizona State won its final three games of the 2019 season, including a 20-14 victory over Florida State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, to conclude the recently completed campaign with an 8-5 record.
NAU's 11-game slate will continue the following week with its home opener versus South Dakota on Sept. 12 in the Walkup Skydome. The Coyotes, out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, are coming off a 5-7 season. NAU's home opener will be the first meeting between the teams since 2014, when the Coyotes edged the Jacks, 28-21, in Vermillion, S.D. NAU knocked off South Dakota the year prior in the Skydome by a 22-16 score in the only other previous matchup.
NAU will play its final non-conference game, albeit against a Big Sky opponent, on Sept. 19 when the Lumberjacks travel to Eastern Washington for the second game in a home-and-home non-conference series. The two teams played their first non-conference game in 2018 – a 31-26 Eastern Washington win – in the Skydome. It will also mark the second consecutive year that NAU visits Eastern Washington.
