After cruising through the bracket of the 3A Conference tournament, the Page Sand Devils girls basketball team is set to play for a state title on Monday when they take on familiar foe Monument Valley at Gila River Arena.
The No. 3-ranked Sand Devils, who missed winning a title by one point a year ago in a 41-40 loss to Valley Christian, has won all of its postseason games by double digits on the way to returning to the championship round, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 186-137.
The 12th-ranked Mustangs, on the other hand, made the finals by narrowly beating Valley Christian in the quarterfinals, 46-45, and knocking off the No. 1 seed in Ganado, 38-32, in the semifinals.
Both residing in the 3A's North Region, Page and Monument Valley split the regular-season series at a game apiece, with the Mustangs spoiling the Sand Devils' season opener, 58-51. The Sand Devils responded with a road victory over the Mustangs, 33-31, on Jan. 16 before handily Monument Valley with ease, 47-20, in the region tournament.
Page is led by senior Jacey Salabiye and Lelisa Watson, and juniors Mikala Benally and Myka Taliman. In 22 games including tournament play outside the regular season, Salabiye has averaged 13 points per game for the Sand Devils, with Watson next in line at 8.6.
The Sand Devils went 13-5 in the regular season. The finals are set for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
