Six of the Northern Arizona women's tennis team's seven players notched singles victories on a successful first day of the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains on Thursday.
Senior Chiara Tomasetti and freshman Mimi Bland of the Lumberjacks both advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flight draws.
Tomasetti was the lone Northern Arizona player to win both of her singles matches on the first day of fall competition. After dispatching Colorado State's Alyssa Grijalva, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round, Tomasetti needed a rally in the second round versus Ana Fernandez of Wyoming.
Fernandez claimed the opening set convincingly before Tomasetti posted two dominant set wins to move on in the Flight A main draw by a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 score.
Tomasetti was joined by junior Ellie Millard and sophomores Emilie Haakansson and Adrianna Sosnowska in Flight A. Millard and Sosnowska each won their first-round matchups in straight sets before bowing out in the next round. Millard defeated Northern Colorado's Rafffa Mora, 7-5, 6-3, while Sosnowska knocked off Montana State's Caitlin Ward, 6-3, 6-3.

Haakansson bounced back from a hard-fought first-round defeat to New Mexico's Bronte Murgett with a straight-set victory over Mirte Van Baelen of Montana State in the consolation draw. Haakansson moved past Van Baelen, 7-5, 6-3.
In Flight B, NAU's two freshmen Elinor Beazley and Bland competed along with junior Sydney Roman. Bland advanced to the second round due to her opponent suffering an injury and then earned a three-set victory over Air Force's Sydney Fitch to qualify for the Flight B quarterfinals.
Bland was the only Lumberjack to defeat an Air Force opponent on their home court on Thursday and she battled for the win in her first match with Northern Arizona. Bland defeat Fitch, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Roman and Beazley both fell to the consolation draw, but Beazley managed to pick up her first collegiate win in her second match against JJ Chen of Montana State, 6-4, 6-0.
The Bedford Cup in the Mountains will continue on today with two rounds of doubles action and one round of singles play starting at 8 a.m.
