Competing at the Thunder Holiday Duels tournament, the Page Sand Devils wrestling team went 3-1 in St. George, Utah, on Friday.
Heavyweight Levi Telshaw provided two pins on the first day of the tourney for the Sand Devils, with one of his falls pushing a match against a Kanab team out of reach to help secure a 42-33 team victory. Hitting the mats at 195 pounds, Taylor Nez notched a second-period pin that put Page ahead 30-27, and a Kanab forfeit at 220 followed.
Against Grand, Page got some quick falls from Lorin Benally and Terran Blackgoat. Benally, wrestling at 160, got his opponent's shoulders to the mat in 37 seconds, and Blackgoat needed just 55 seconds to win his match. Kamron Whitewater, whose opponents at the 113-pound mark mostly forfeited, picked up a third-period pin in Page's 48-30 victory over Grand.
Zachery Ruiz (120 pounds) and Kaleb June (132) also picked up pins against Grand.
The Sand Devils just missed going 4-0 as they suffered a 36-35 loss to Snow Canyon. Myron Bryant's second-period pin cut the deficit to 10 for Page, and a technical fall from Nez got the Sand Devils within striking distance down 31-28. Snow Canyon, however, responded with its own tech fall on the way to the victory.
Page beat a shorthanded Dixie team, 54-24. Telshaw also got pin in that match.
