Pedro Billups and Brandon Barreras made their way into the individual rounds to lead the Coconino Panthers at the Moon Valley Invitational in Phoenix days before Christmas.
Coconino's 106-pounder, Billups finished in fifth place as an individual and left the invite with an 8-2 record. The sophomore took fifth by outlasting Jaxen Davis of Tempe High for a 5-1 decision victory.
Barreras, wrestling at 160 pounds for the Panthers, made his way to the consultation semifinals before being nixed from the invite in sixth place, collecting a 6-4 record on the way. The senior had four decisions and a pin in 1:53 during the tourney.
Brandon's brother, Marcello, went 4-3 at 152 pounds, and teammate and 145-pound wrestler Talyn Godwin also notched a 4-3 record.
Marcello locked horns with Jose Figuroa of Marcos De Niza on the way to a grueling 15-8 win by decision. Godwin tallied a pin and two decisions during his time on the mats. Taking on Jason Singh of Mesa High, Godwin came out of a close match with a 4-3 decision in order to take home a winning record.
Jaden Hart provided Coconino with a couple wins at 120 pounds, collecting a major decision and pin. At 126 pounds for the Panthers, Carter Frontz contributed two pins in his seven total rounds of wrestling.
