The Division III Coconino Panthers girls came just short of a second straight team win and the boys had a solid third-place finish on Saturday at the annual Small School Invite.

Coconino's Woodlyn Smith placed second in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:30.35 for the Panthers, whose girls side scored 65 total points as Payson scored 65.5 for the gold at Mesa Community College. In the 3200m for Coconino, Kaelynn Ashley placed third with a time of 12:35.89.

On the boys side, in the pole vault for the Panthers, Luke Hagaman cleared 13-06 for first place, with Grant Hagaman taking second for the team with a height of 11-00. Also adding points with a strong performance in the field, Dawson Buckley took second place in the shot put on a mark of 44-10.25.

Also for the CHS boys, Brennan Motes placed sixth in the high jump with a height of 5-08 and seventh in the triple jump at 37-07.50, and Kade Owen was fifth in the long jump at 19-01.25.

Smith finished third in the 100m hurdles in 17.16, and teammate Jordan Brockman came in fourth in 17.65. Brockman earned a bronze in the 300m hurdle on a 52.12 time. The Panthers girls 4x800m relay team of Lilia Tassinari, Hope Saxton, Willow Wunner and Ashley took second place, clocking a 10:57.78.

Coconino's girls had a good showing in field events as well, led by a second-place throw of 31-11.5 in the shot put from Maya Tijerin. In the high jump for the Panthers, Rachel Crowther came in fourth with a height of 4-08, and Abigail Zacharias placed ninth in the triple jump with a spot of 28-05.50. In the discus, Charity Saganey was seventh with a throw of 88-05.

The boys 4x100 relay put together a second-place result with a time of 45.60 as Zachary Yubeta, Kade Owen, Tanner McNeese, Timothy Rodriguez teamed up. The Coconino 4x800 squad of Mitchell Jacobson, Taylor Taliman, Shane Malloy and Sean Malone had a 9:01.06 time for fourth place.

Rodriguez came in seventh in the 100m with at time of 11.81, McNeese was sixth in the 400m in 53.91 and Malone added a top-10 performance on an eighth-place finish in the 800m in 2:08.93. In the 110m hurdles John Leeds placed sixth with a time of 17.53 and in the 300 hurdles he got 10th with a time of 44.56.

Coconino's boys 4x400 relay placed sixth (3:44.70) and was made up of McNeese, Taliman, Rodriguez, and Malone.
