Shortened from 36 holes to 18 due to inclement weather, the Northern AZ Jr Championship teed off Wednesday at Continental Golf Club with Hayden Sayre of Phoenix firing a 4-under-par 68, edging out Simon Trebon (69) of Flagstaff by one stroke to win in the boys championship division.
Noah Nuez of Laveen finished close behind in third place at 2-under 70. Trebon, who finished 27th for Northland Prep Academy at the 2018 AIA Division III state golf meet, tallied seven birdies, with two coming back-to-back on holes 17 and 18. The front nine ended at 2-under for Trebon, who then shot a 1-under on the back nine.
Coleden Mercer of Flagstaff finished at 2-over-par 74, also ending the tournament as a runner-up in the boys 15-18 division. Kai Heiner of Gilbert won the age group in a playoff. Mercer birdied the sixth and 15th holes, bogeyed the first and fifth, and carded one double bogey on 18.
In the girls championship division, Breyana Matthews of Scottsdale won by six strokes at 2-under-par 70 to beat Alyza Flores of Vail and Belle Balkan of Mesa, who both finished tied for second at 4-over-par 76.
Levi Mercer from Flagstaff won the boys 10 and under division at 1-over-par 37. Preston Ross of Page took second place with a 6-over-par 42, with Karsten McCain of Flagstaff placing in a tie for fourth and Flagstaff's Kyler Choi and Kal Choi getting sixth and seventh place, respectively. Levi had just one bogey on the nine-hole course.
Camden Braidech of Scottsdale won in the boys 13-14 division at even-par 72. Ryan Hanawalt of Leveen took top honors in the boys 11-12 division at 4-over-par 40.
Joy Callinan of Makawao, Hawaii, won in the girls 15-18 division at 3-over-par 75. Madison Hepner of Scottsdale won the girls 13-14 division at 21-over-par 93, and Tatum Partridge of Scottsdale took home gold in the girls 11-12 division at 9-over-par 35.
