After two weeks on the road and a perfect 6-0 record to begin the season, the Northern Arizona volleyball team opens its home schedule this weekend, hosting the 2014 Lumberjack Classic.
The Lumberjacks will welcome Albany, Grand Canyon and UC Riverside to the Rolle Activity Center for the two-day tournament, Friday and Saturday.
NAU’s home and tournament opener will be Friday at 11 a.m. against in-state rival Grand Canyon. The Lumberjacks will play UC Riverside at 5:30 p.m. for the final of four matches on Friday and will conclude the tournament versus Albany at noon on Saturday.
“What we’ve learned over the first couple of weeks is that we still have a lot of room to grow,” said head coach Ken Murphy. “This weekend is an opportunity to keep working on some things and keep improving on parts of our game that we’re focusing on. Playing at home is good for us because we’ll get a little more rest and we’ll play in front of a crowd that we know we play well in front of.”
NAU and Grand Canyon will be meeting for the 21st time in school history. NAU has never lost to GCU and won the last meeting in 1993 in four sets (15-9, 10-15, 15-9, 15-8). The Lumberjacks will face UC Riverside for the sixth time in school history. UC Riverside leads the all-time series 3-2. NAU and Albany will be meeting for the second time in school history. NAU won the first meeting in 2007 in four sets (27-30, 30-23, 30-27, 30-26) at its own Hilton Garden Inn NAU Invitational in Flagstaff.
