Valley Christian, a familiar guest of Page High sports teams, came away with a 55-36 boys basketball victory Friday night in the semifinals of the Lake Powell Holiday Classic.
Four weeks after ending the football Sand Devils' season in the 3A Conference state quarterfinals, the visitors from Chandler (7-1) cruised in the 41st annual Page hoops tourney. Valley Christian turned a seven-point halftime lead into a rout on a frigid third quarter by Page (3-2).
Page was held to a single free throw in the third quarter and couldn't manage a second-half basket until a minute had elapsed in the fourth quarter. By the time the Trojans' Connor Braun recorded the game's only dunk, Valley Christian held a 46-21 lead.
The much bigger Trojans controlled the boards, distributed the ball more effectively and solved Page's best first-half weapon. Junior Dainian Sloan, who hit three 3-pointers in the early going, was held scoreless after the break. Sloan and senior Justin Salabiye led Page with nine points each. Page totaled 23 turnovers to 12 for the Trojans.
Zach Timmer had 15 for Valley Christian and Jalen Grijalva added 12. The Trojans will meet Rancho (Las Vegas) in the championship game at 3:30 p.m. today. Page and Kingman Academy will play for third place at 2 p.m.
The football Trojans made two trips to Page this fall, losing in the regular season in September before the taking the Nov. 9 state game 28-22.
