QUESTION: How do you think the timing of the Goldschmidt trade affected Cardinals fans' opinions about this offseason? If it happened last week as opposed to more than two months ago, do you think fans would be more appreciative of the Cards' offseason work?

GOOLD: Probably. And can I just say that is the height of silliness? If a team acquires a top-five hitter in the league, does it matter when they get him? Is Goldschmidt somehow less of an MVP candidate because he was acquired via trade in early December as opposed to signed off the market in January? I don't get that.

I read a preview magazine that predicted Goldschmidt would win the NL MVP award, and there are times when it seems like in this chat and on Twitter or in my inbox that fans think the Cardinals didn't make an addition at all this winter or that they would rather the team not have traded for Goldschmitd and signed Machado or Harper. Now, could the team Cardinals have done more? Absolutely. Sure. You bet. Argue away. But Goldschmidt is an elite player.

Follow-up: No one discounts that Goldy is elite. The question is: IS HE ENOUGH? I think a lot of fans are worried that he isn't enough, and that we are basically just getting a replay of last year. Big trade, sign an arm for the bullpen and call it a day. There are holes in this team. Holes that could be glaring, and Mo and Girsch did nothing to try and address them.

GOOLD: I know of people who do not think the Cardinals added an elite talent this winter. There have been questions on Twitter and in emails and in this chat about how the Cardinals didn't add a team-changing bat. So, there's evidence that some people think that. Now, more think the Cardinals didn't do enough and that's fine. That makes a lot of sense. I haven't said anything else. Carry on.
