Logging four mercy rules over four games to punch a ticket to the state tournament, the Flagstaff Little League Softball All-Stars 9- and 10-year-olds became District 1 champions on Monday after defeating Holbrook, 16-1.
Jadyn Josytewa led off the game with a walk, Kaitlyn Tso singled, Alyssa Fockler walked and Sam Rodriguez singled to score Josytewa. Heads-up base running by Tso and Fockler scored two more in the first.
Tso started off well in the circle, striking out the order in the bottom of the opening frame.
In the top of the second, Flagstaff sent 15 players to the plate and scored 10 runs. Destiny Villas and Abi McDermed opened the gates with back-to-back doubles. Five more hits came before the first out was recorded. In her second at bat of the inning, Villas doubled to the left-center gap and scored on a single by Koda Lakin. Lakin scored on a Josytewa triple. Flagstaff shut their opponent down in the second, getting two more strikeouts from Tso on the way.
In the top of the fourth Kiana Butler singled. Villas and Tso added triples to the cause and Fockler joined in with a single. Tso tallied seven strikeouts in three innings.
Holbrook had a player reach in the third, but Alyssa Fockler threw her out on a steal attempt at second. Hannah Thornsley struck out the side to end the game. Josytewa, Tso, Fockler and Villas ended the game with three hits a piece, and Rodriguez and McDermed had two hits a piece.
The Flagstaff Softball 9/10 All-Stars are poised and ready to take their game to Phoenix and represent District 1 in the state championship tournament.
