John Leguizamo makes an impressive feature directorial debut in this underdog film about a scrappy Florida high school team that took home a national championship in 1998. Leguizamo, who also stars as the teens’ determined coach, does a superb job of capturing urban life and the struggles his heroes face when they’re not capturing pawns. (Amazon)

The hero in “The Reflecting Pool,” unorthodox homicide detective Marko Zorn, has tastes far in excess of his Washington, D.C., homicide detective’s salary. That results in him taking side work not in keeping with his job. Zorn’s worlds collide when he comes upon the drowned body of a Secret Service agent and finds himself on the trail of bad guys with far worse plans in the offing.

This is “Horizon Zero Dawn 2” with a somewhat different name, and it again follows Aloy. The postapocalyptic hero is back and this time she makes her way to North America. She’ll face off against Sylens who now has control of HADES, the original’s main villain. The trailer showed off new robot designs and fresh areas for Aloy to explore, most notably the underwater elements.

This title is notable because it appears to be the only one on the list coming out this year and it stars one of the few Latino heroes in gaming. Morales was introduced in 2018’s “Spider-Man” as a teenager just learning his powers, but in this sequel, it appears he’ll be setting out on his own.

Author Eoin Colfer’s beloved kid hero (Ferdia Shaw) comes to life in this family adventure film directed by Kenneth Branagh. The story follows Artemis, a 12-year-old genius, as he desperately tries to save his abducted father. In order to pay his ransom, he must infiltrate an ancient, underground civilization populated by powerful fairies. (June 12, Disney+).
