As a newcomer to Flagstaff, I have been schooled about the need to conserve our supply of water and I have taken steps to limit my water usage. Therefore, I was quite shocked to see the photo on the front page of the April 2 Arizona Daily Sun. The photo shows fire crews celebrating Flagstaff Airport’s expansion of flights by creating an arch of water over the first plane to arrive. This waste of water was very confusing to me.

Since then, it has come to my attention that Ft. Tuthill was given permission by the Coconino County Board of Supervisors to use 1 million gallons of potable water for man-made snowmaking. Additionally, the Jay Lively Activity Center also uses a huge amount of potable water to make ice for their rinks. Now, I am wondering what other questionable circumstances our precious resource is being used. Perhaps the ways our water is being used needs to be revisited.
