I just had the distinct pleasure of announcing the recipient of the Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner Eleanor Roosevelt Award to County Recorder Patty Hansen. In reading her many contributions to the community, I was struck by the fact that we forget just how competent and dedicated our local government officials are.
While the elected officials at the state and national level are mired in various forms of corruption, cupidity, and callousness, here in Coconino County our Flagstaff City Council and Board of Supervisors as well as the other civil servants work diligently to carry out the will of the people. Blessedly, out of state money has not yet bought their loyalty and attention.
With this in mind, I’d like to salute our local officials and thank them for respectfully trying to balance the interests of the various groups in Flagstaff and Coconino County. Voters often forget that we do not all think alike, and the role of government is to find the public interest, not follow the orders of a particular ideology or economic interest. It’s so refreshing to praise good government.
