Thanks to the Daily Sun for the guest editorial on June 4. Bipartisan cooperation and civil discourse between two hyper-partisan lawmakers, referring to Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez agreeing to jointly work to legislate a lifetime ban on former legislators becoming paid lobbyists.
This would not interfere with free speech, since former legislators could still voice their opinion to their elected legislators, they just could not be paid for their opinion sharing. This would not infringe on the welfare of former legislators, since they would still have their generous benefits package after leaving Congress.
If enacted as Cruz and AOC have tweeted, this legislation would help to drain the swamp. We can look forward in the coming months to role call votes that will reveal which of the 100 Senators and 489 Representatives are willing to put national interest above personal gain.
