We are blessed with what I like to call “Cadillac” trash service here in Flagstaff. We get a great big bin to put all of our weekly trash in, another big bin for mixed recycling (no sorting required) and bulk pickup once a month.
That last is probably the best of them all. Every month we can put whatever we want by the curb and the city will come by and take it to the landfill for us. No fee and no questions asked – they just make it go away. This is truly a very convenient service that I doubt is available in many other cities.
I’d like to make two suggestions about bulk pickup. First, please don’t put your stuff out there until close to your pickup date. You are tired of looking at that stuff, which is why you’re probably getting rid of it, but we don’t want to look at it for a whole month either. Get on the city website and find out what the pickup date is for your neighborhood and put your stuff out just before that date.
Second, try and get rid of your stuff some other way. I see all kinds of nice things set out for bulk pickup in my neighborhood: TVs, treadmills, bedroom sets, etc. If that stuff is in decent condition try and find someone to take it rather than just sending it to the landfill. I just take a quick picture, post it on Craigslist under the free section and mention that it’s sitting at the end of my driveway for whoever wants it. It’s always gone within 24 hours.
It we all did these two things, our neighborhoods would look better and we would save a lot of space in our landfill.
