‘Tis the season for Coconino County to send out the property tax bills. I’ve been getting a county residential property tax bill for 25 years, and every year when I get my bill I ask myself why the Coconino County Treasurer doesn’t produce a bill that actually explains clearly what our tax dollars are spent on.
Here’s what I’m talking about. On my bill, there’s a line that says SD#1 Class B Bonds. What does this mean? What are the bonds for? How much interest are we paying? There is also a line that says SE SD#1 DO NOT USE. What does this mean?
One of the biggest problems with government at all levels is its lack of transparency. I hope the Coconino County Treasurer will consider in the future including more meaningful information about every line on the tax bill so taxpayers, including those of us who don’t understand government finance and all of the acronyms, can understand what the county is doing with our tax dollars.
