Dear Editor, I am writing to voice my opposition to the Arizona Republican Party's consideration of cancelling the Republican presidential primary in Arizona. This is a bad move based both on voter participation and optics.
I have never in my life experienced a party cancelling a primary based on the fact that they have an incumbent in office, which is the stated reason for this proposal. Not only does this move disenfranchise Arizona Republicans from the process of choosing a president, but it will also play very bad in the media - which is exactly what President Trump does not need right now. It would be much better for the president to be able to tout a win here in Arizona in a contested primary if that were the outcome.
