A 14-year-old appears to have fallen to her death at the Horseshoe Bend Overlook on Monday afternoon. The girl was visiting Horsheshoe Bend with her family from the greater San Jose, Calif. area when she went missing, according to a Wednesday press release from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
The girl’s family reported her missing on Monday at 4 p.m, telling officers that the last time they had seen her was at 2 p.m. that day.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Air Rescue out of Flagstaff responded to search the area. Personnel aboard the DPS helicopter visually located the missing juvenile dead approximately 700 feet below Horseshoe Bend Overlook.
Due to impending nightfall, rescuers were not able to recover the girl’s body that evening. Sheriff’s Office and the DPS helicopter returned on Christmas morning and recovered the body around 10 a.m.
The girl’s body was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.
While initial investigation indicates an accidental fall, the incident is still under investigation and pending review by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
