Every time Crystal Morgan, 35, attempted to divorce her husband Timothy Duran, 38, he threatened to kill her, a close friend of Morgan told Coconino County Sheriff's investigators.
The woman's interview, details about the couple's relationship and the homicide investigation were released in a sheriff's office report Monday. Duran allegedly stabbed Morgan to death in their home in Doney Park on March 21. He is currently behind bars.
A recently released report from the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office shows Morgan suffered a total of 33 stab wounds, up from initial reports that suggested at least 21 wounds.
Morgan’s friend alleged to investigators that Morgan and Duran’s fights “always” escalated to the level of threats. The friend alleged Duran would apologize afterward and things would get better for a short time.
Morgan had taken photos of herself with black eyes that Duran had given her during a fight in August 2018. Morgan's friend turned those photos over to sheriff investigators.
Morgan had filed for divorce from Duran on March 18, and was found stabbed to death on her neighbor’s lawn three days later. Duran was found in his brother’s truck traveling southbound on the I-17 near Rim Rock on the day of the stabbing.
A grand jury charged Duran with first-degree murder for her death. Duran was also charged with first-degree burglary, child abuse, two counts of threatening or intimidating, and two counts of aggravated assault. Many of the charges are classified as domestic violence charges.
Steve Harvey, Duran’s attorney, did not have any comment on the report at this time.
History of violence
The official sheriff’s office report detailed calls their agency responded to between Morgan and Duran spanning back to 2015. There were at least five reports of domestic violence, where Duran either threatened or been violent with Morgan. In some reports, Morgan also fought back.
Duran and Morgan were both arrested for assault and disorderly conduct, stemming from allegations of domestic violence in their relationship.
In a February 2018 report, Morgan received threatening text messages from Duran.
“I will kill you if you (sic) and your family if you call the cops,” Duran texted her at the time, according to sheriff reports. At the time she went to the court to get an order of protection, but the process was never completed.
On March 20, the day before Morgan died, she reported threats made to one of her daughters by Duran. Morgan overheard Duran cuss and insult her daughter over the phone, and say their daughter should “buy a rope and hang herself,” according to sheriff reports.
After, Morgan filed for an order of protection against Duran, but it had not been served before Morgan’s death. Deputies attempted to contact Duran, but were unsuccessful.
Witnesses allege Duran stabbed Morgan the next day.
A family member alleged they saw Duran attempt to suffocate Morgan with a pillow in the past, according to sheriff interviews. Additionally, a family member alleged Duran had ripped out Morgan’s lip ring in a separate incident.
A family member told sheriff investigators that Morgan and her family were going to move out of their Doney Park home into an apartment. They also said Duran had moved in with family in the days before the stabbing.
Morgan had changed the locks to prevent him from entering the home, according to the sheriff report.
On the day of the stabbing, a family member said they woke up to Duran pounding on a window. Duran allegedly entered the home through that window, which they had forgotten to lock.
The family member explained that Duran had a screwdriver in hand as he entered the home. They alleged he kept the screwdriver in his truck.
Duran stabbed Morgan once in the kitchen with the screwdriver, multiple witnesses alleged. After attempting to leave, he returned and allegedly said “I’m tired of this” and took a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing Morgan.
After the stabbing, Morgan got up and ran outside, where she fainted. Duran allegedly spoke with Morgan’s mother before leaving, covered with blood.
After Duran left the scene, he allegedly met with a friend of his and asked for a gun, the friend told investigators. Duran said he wanted to either kill himself or commit suicide by cop, according to Duran's friend.
Duran left the scene and was eventually stopped by police officers on a road in Rimrock near the southbound exit of the I-17. Duran spoke to officers after he was taken out of the car.
"I've destroyed my whole (expletive) life," Duran said to officers at the scene.
