Arizona Snowbowl delayed a lift maintenance project by one day, allowing skiers to take advantage of the new powder on Sunday and Monday following the weekend snowstorm. Snowbowl's original plan was to close the Agassiz chairlift Monday, Jan. 7 through Wednesday, Jan. 9 so crews could replace the gearbox located in the drive station at the bottom terminal.
The gearbox was originally scheduled for replacement before the holiday season. However, due to manufacturing and shipping delays in Europe, the gearbox arrived this week.
"There is no good time to close a lift for maintenance. However, we want to make this exchange now so we do not have any issues or downtime with the current gearbox the remainder of the ski season. We decided to sandwich the project between two storm cycles, this Sunday and next Thursday," said J.R. Murray, Snowbowl General Manager.
A certified technician is on site at Snowbowl to oversee the installation of the new gearbox. The lift crew at Snowbowl has performed maintenance projects on the existing gearbox many times in the past and are experienced with the procedure. With the project expected to last Tuesday through Thrusday, the lift is expected to be operational Friday, Jan. 11.
