The Flagstaff Police Department reports that Phoenician George Reed, 58, was struck and killed by Sergio Alonso, 45, while standing outside of his vehicle on South Lake Mary Road on Sunday, Jan. 20.
Alonso has been charged with driving while impaired to the slightest degree, extreme DUI, aggravated assault and manslaughter. Extreme DUI is triggered when drivers blow between a .15 and .20 blood alcohol content limit; the legal limit to drive is .08.
Flagstaff officers originally responded to the area of South Lake Mary Road East Frontier Avenue at 12:57 p.m. after a report of a person being struck by a vehicle.
Reed had been standing on the shoulder of South Lake Mary Road as the vehicle approached, also driving on the shoulder. In an attempt to avoid being struck, Reed ran toward the center of the road to avoid the vehicle.
The vehicle corrected onto the roadway and struck Reed. Reed was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not clear at this time why Reed was outside of his vehicle at the time of the incident, which is still being investigated by the Collision Reconstruction Unit. The roads were closed for the investigation, but have since opened.
Alonso is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond while the criminal complaint is pending.
