To the editor:
Last week, Senator McCain showed real leadership by supporting expanded criminal background checks for gun sales. He stood up to the NRA's Washington lobby, advocating for something that a majority of Arizonans support. I am disappointed in Senator Flake's vote in that he buckled to the Washington gun lobby and joined a minority of senators to block what I consider life-saving legislation.

Some senators have said that they don't care what 90 percent of us want and have closed their ears to the pleas of those who have lost their children and family members to gun violence. Until they do care about the children whose lives have been cut short and those at risk of the same fate, more of us need to keep coming back with even more of our calls, emails, visits, nonviolent direct action protests, and votes (the most important nonviolent protest). We need to stand with Senator McCain, who knows what common sense already tells us: Background checks work to keep guns out of dangerous hands -- they save lives and help to make our communities safer.
Our children have a right to grow up in a caring and decent society that protects their right to live and learn in safety. Owning assault weapons or high-capacity magazines have nothing to do with self-defense or hunting and have no place in the hands of non-military and non-law enforcement personnel. Without these weapons of war directed against our children, how many would still be alive today?
