The National Weather Service says soaking rains are on their way this weekend, but mainly east of Flagstaff.

The forecast says far eastern part of Navajo and Apache counties can expect 1 to 2 inches by the time a subtropical front moves out of the area Sunday. Flagstaff can expect a quarter- to a half-inch of rain, with lesser amounts to the west.

The storm front Friday will be preceded on Thursday afternoon by gusty winds and dry lightning that could create critical fire weather conditions for parts of the Coconino and Kaibab plateaus for several hours.

Much cooler temperatures are expected Friday and into the weekend, with a high of just 67 degrees forecast for Flagstaff Saturday.

After the front moves to the east, another ridge of high pressure will quickly settle over northern Arizona, bringing a return of warm, dry weather early in the work week.
