Born in Chicota, Texas but he grew up in Superior, Arizona and lived in Phoenix for a short time before heading to Flagstaff to attend the Arizona State College (now NAU) to become a Teacher. In Flagstaff he taught, mentored, coached, taught drivers ed, and friended everyone. He took his Basketball team to the playoffs multiple times, but won it in 1973.
