Leanne Elinore Rumery, age 81, passed away May 25, 2019. A resident of Flagstaff for 48 years, she first taught stringed instruments in the Flagstaff Public School System, and later played violin in the Flagstaff Symphony. In 1978 she began her career as an innovated senior instructor in the Northern Arizona University Speech and Communication Department, retiring as Division Chair in 2000.
Born in Kalamazoo, MI in 1937, she grew up in Cleveland, OH, Buffalo, NY, and Omaha, NE. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN, where she was a member of the famed St. Olaf Choir. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and did doctoral studies at the University of Boulder, Co, and at NAU.
Leanne was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth (also an NAU professor,) son David, and grandson Tyler. She is survived by her sister Marjeanne Blinn of Manhattan Beach, CA.
Plans for a private graveside service are pending. In lieu of flowers, any memorial gifts in her name are gratefully directed to Elaine’s Forest House, or High Country Humane, both of Flagstaff.
