(January 17, 1963-January 8, 2019)
Bert Wayne Shafer came into this world on January 17, 1963 in Flagstaff, AZ to Robert and Janice Shafer.
From a young age, Bert excelled in athletics and he loved the outdoors. Bert was passionate about football, baseball and wrestling. He graduated from Flagstaff High School in 1981 where he lettered in all three sports. Not only did Bert excel in school sports, he also found a love for skiing and could often be found on the slopes racing. He spent some time on the ski team competing in slalom events.
Shortly after graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Penny Stuber. Together they welcomed son’s Daeton Paul and Jacob Wayne in Flagstaff, AZ. Bert taught his sons how to ski when they were very young and as a family they spent a great deal of time skiing at Arizona Snowbowl and Purgatory Ski Resort in Colorado. Eventually the family relocated to Aztec, New Mexico. Bert shared his passion for sports with his sons by coaching their football and baseball teams. He also taught them survival skills and they shared a love for camping, boating, hiking, hunting and anything outdoors.
As an adult Bert found his true gift of carpentry. He obtained his contractor’s license and began working on remodels and new construction. The work that Bert produced was truly remarkable. Bert eventually relocated to Colorado where he and his son Jacob built a home together. In addition to construction, Bert was an avid dog lover and his dogs were always the best trained and most well-behaved.
While in Colorado Bert met then married Diana Lee Swanger. In the early 2000’s, Bert and Diana purchased an RV and travelled all over the western region of the U.S. He liked to talk about his travels and meet new people. He eventually relocated back to Flagstaff, AZ where he spent the rest of his days.
Bert impacted many lives and the loss of him is great. Rather than questioning, we choose to remember him with love. He is survived by his son Daeton Paul (Heather), son Jacob Wayne (Sara), sister Pamela Zanzucchi (Joe), brother Gary Shafer, grandchildren Veronykah LeAnn, Daeton Paul Jr., and Alice Rose, and nephew Bobby (Cori) Zanzucchi. He is also survived by his step-mother Sarah Shafer, and two step sisters (Deidre Crawley (Jim Haslett), and Kirsten Crawley), step-niece Tulasi Fowler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Charles Shafer and Janice Jean Shafer.
The funeral services will be held on Friday, January 18th at 10:00 am at the Flagstaff Federated Community Church, 400 W. Aspen, Ave., Flagstaff, AZ.
