Barbara was born in Gary, Indiana, on May 10, 1943, to John and Jean Maris. She graduated from Washington University with a BA and later from Cal State LA with a Master’s degree in music education. She passed away unexpectedly on June 14, 2019 in Flagstaff.
Barbara's first love in life was her family. She was ever present in the minds and hearts of her husband, brothers, children, and grandchildren alike. She motivated, encouraged, guided, and cared for every member of her family. Barbara's influence spilled over onto her many friends, who admired her intelligence, determination, and sage advice. Barbara considered her health to be top priority and was fiercely determined to remain in great shape through her final years.
Barbara’s other passions were music and education. In her early life, she taught music to preschoolers, and later taught a variety of subjects at Carden of the Peaks. She was an inspiring teacher. Her love for music led her to join the Flagstaff Master Chorale in 1985. She was a first soprano for over 30 years. It was especially gratifying to watch her encourage young singers; she often recruited talented young people for the Chorale when she ran across them.
