McConnell Drive Reopened

McConnell Drive under I-17 reopened Monday morning.

McConnell Drive below Interstate 17 and its off-ramp have reopened in time for the start of Northern Arizona University move-in day Thursday.

The road, which connects the NAU campus to the Woodlands Village Shopping Center, reopened Monday morning after being closed for just over a month for construction work on the bridge above.

Arizona Department of Transportation crews will continue to work on the bridge this week from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, during which time the road will be closed. The off-ramp will remain open.

ADOT spokesperson Ryan Harding said NAU officials are aware of these closures.

“The closure times are such in order to avoid impacts to university events during the day and evening as the fall semester begins,” he said in an email.

The evening closures are expected to last only through Friday, but the bridge work will continue for the next several weeks as part of a two-year project to widen the bridge, replace existing bridge surfaces and create a sidewalk on the north side of McConnell Drive.

Posted traffic signs note that the road work will last until Oct. 1, 2020.

Another full closure of McConnell Drive will take place next summer as well as overnight closures throughout spring and fall 2020, according to a project overview.

Lane closures in both directions along I-17 north of the Interstate 40 interchange will continue throughout construction, as will intermittent closures of the Flagstaff Urban Trail between Beulah Boulevard and Knoles Drive.

Student move-in

Regular move-in for NAU students will begin Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

More than 10,000 NAU students typically live on campus each year; the university ranks in the top 1% nationally for number of available on-campus beds.

NAU has released a move-in map directing incoming students and families to campus parking lots and residence halls via South Milton Road, West Butler Avenue, South San Francisco Street and West University Drive, among on-campus roads.

Expect increased traffic in the area through Monday.
