Join us in celebrating Richard D. Nearing aka Rich Malone who passed into eternal life October 6, 2018 at the age of 54 years. Rich lost a two year battle to cancer while in Hospice care at Valley View Care in Cottonwood.
Rich Malone has been the smiling voice on the other side of your speaker since 1986, beginning his illustrious radio broadcasting career on Magic 93.9 FM KMGN during his radio program studies at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Waking up Northern Arizona for nearly thirty years on The Heat 97.5 KVNA FM, The Eagle 105.1 FM KFLX, Sunny 97 turned Sunny 100 and now Arizona’s Adult Alternative KVNA FM. In addition to his morning show, he has been Operations Manager for Yavapai Broadcasting since 2000. Proud of the many lives he enlightened; whether through his daily, lighthearted morning show, promoting new musical artists, or as a trusted mentor.
Born to parents Richard C. and Barbara J. Nearing in 1964 at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, California. The Nearing family moved to Tempe, Arizona when “Rick” was 10 years old. He was a dedicated Boy Scout and earned the prestigious Eagle Scout rank in 1982. He continued as a member of Tempe’s inaugural Explorer Post #477 organized with an emphasis on rescue skills.
Rick Nearing graduated from McClintock High School in Tempe in 1982. As a member of the Chargers Marching Band he, with the help of his fundraising parents Bud and Barbara, performed in the Hawaiian Parade of Bands April 1980. Now going by Rich, he continued playing saxophone in marching and jazz band at Mesa Community College and later at NAU for one year. Richard D. Nearing received his Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Arizona University in 1988.
Rich and wife Juli met at work, bound by a common love of music. Their loving three year courtship blossomed. Juli’s family fell in love with him nearly as quickly. United in matrimony June 13th, 2009 accompanied by their children, Best Man James Yanni, Maid of Honor Janet Nawalnic, family and friends.
He was a fan of all major sports and spent many hours as a spectator of his step children’s activities, encouraging them through victories and losses. Rich frequently enjoyed car shows, camping and fishing.
Richard D. Nearing is survived by his loving wife Julianne and two step children Heather and Peter, his mother Barbara Nearing, sisters Sherry Lee and Nanci Mizell as well as brother-in-law and mentor Dan Lee. In addition, his nephews and nieces and their children, cousins Susan Bell and Barry Hoff with their spouses Bob and Linda, respectively and a bevy of friends he has gained throughout the years. His father Richard “Bud” Nearing preceded him in death at the age of 93 years in 2016.
A Celebration of Life will take place December 9, 2018 from 1-4pm at The Hub 525 Posse Ground Rd, Sedona, AZ. Light refreshments served and sports jerseys are optional.
