Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Executive Director Larry Wallen rejected a new contract with the school for the next school year on March 7, according to an email from the FALA Board of Directors. He asked the board to terminate his employment at the school on March 9.

Wallen was hired by FALA in June 2017 after the previous executive director Laura Kelly left the school in order to take care of her mother in Florida. Wallen was working on a plan to get the school on better financial ground and welcome the school's first sixth-grade class in the fall of 2018.

According to the email from the board, Wallen was offered a one-year contract for the 2018/2019 school year. He had 72 hours to sign the contract and declined.

The email also states, "Recent events have led Mr. Wallen to further request to be released from his current duties, effective March 9, 2018. On March 7, 2018, the Board of Directors voted to grant Mr. Wallen’s request."

The school is currently searching for an interim executive director to finish out the school year. The board plans to post the open position from March 9 through March 23. It will review applications on March 26 with a possible interview and candidate selection date of March 28. They hope to have an interim director in place by April 2.
