Struggle over Taser
A schizophrenic man is expected to face criminal charges for attempting to take a Flagstaff Police Officer’s Taser.
According to the police report, an officer responded to the Flagstaff Medical Center Emergency Department at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday after a patient kicked an EMT in the face. The officer arrested the suspect but had to take him back to FMC after the staff at the Coconino County Detention Facility refused to admit him for medical reasons.
At one point, the officer was escorting the suspect to his hospital bed when the suspect asked if he was carrying a Glock handgun. The suspect then grabbed the Taser on the officer’s belt.
The officer was able to push the suspect away and handcuff him to the bed before he was able to take the weapon. The suspect said he thought he was going for the officer’s gun.
The officer left to answer another call. When he returned, he discovered the same suspect had slipped out of his restraints, threatened staff members and gotten into a struggle with FMC security guards, who ended up Tasing him.
The 36-year-old suspect was handcuffed to the bed and sedated. The case has been sent to the Coconino County Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
The Flagstaff Police Department is investigating a burglary at the east Flagstaff Safeway’s gas station.
According to the police report, an employee noticed the door to the fuel station located at 4910 N. Highway 89 was ajar at about 6:55 a.m. last Thursday. The locking mechanism on the cash register was broken and approximately $300 was missing.
Surveillance footage captured the break-in. The video showed a suspect in a black hoodie and dark pants using a pry tool to open the gas station door shortly after 3 a.m. last Thursday. The suspect then pried open the cash register, took the money and left through the back door a couple minutes later. Nothing else was damaged or missing.
The investigation is ongoing.
