Coconino County investigators are working to determine the identity of a man found dead in the Mount Elden area.
According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, a woman contacted Arizona Department of Public Safety officers on North Highway 89 at approximately 9:10 a.m. Thursday to report that she had discovered a body at a temporary campsite off the Fatman’s Loop trail. The DPS officers followed the witness back to the site, where they found the body of a deceased white male.
DPS then notified the Sheriff’s Office, which sent deputies and detectives to investigate. The body was then released to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the cause of death.
Although detectives believe they may know the name of the dead man, his name will not be released until positive identification and notification of his next of kin are completed.
The investigation is ongoing.
