Community Briefs: Veterans to take therapeutic river trip

For the past three years, Hatch River Expeditions of Flagstaff has partnered with Canyon Heroes, a nonprofit organization based in Pennsylvania, to provide an annual Grand Canyon river trip to veterans. The veterans pay only a nominal fee for trip insurance, with Canyon Heroes supporting the transportation and trip costs through donations. This year’s group, at 18, is the largest yet.

These individuals, men and women who served in every era from Vietnam through Afghanistan, will fly from the four corners of the nation to embark upon a week-long camping and rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

The veterans have been chosen for this trip because they bear the psychological wounds of their service, and will be accompanied by licensed therapists who will facilitate a healing environment surrounded by the natural beauty of the Canyon. The trip will bring together veterans from different armed services and eras, providing them with physical challenges and the opportunity to bond with comrades who share their experiences, whether in battle or in peacetime.
