The No. 5-seeded Basis Flagstaff Flagstaff Yeti, playing host, couldn't hold on at Thorpe Park in the first round of the Division III girls tennis state championship tournament on Tuesday.

The visiting 12th-seeded Arizona College Prep matched the Yeti through singles as the two entered doubles tied at 3-all.

Aeliana Ricci and Samantha Crone took a quick 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles spot over Ivy Nguyen and Naomi Nishikawa. The lead was short-lived, however.

The Knights rattled off two straight wins in the No. 3 flight and the No. 2 flight to complete the 5-4 upset. The Knights took the No. 3 seed matchup 8-4 over Sadie Jensen and Allison Glazer, then Basis couldn't hold a lead in the No. 2 flight as Clara Grams and Lili Derby-Lawson lost the final match of the afternoon 8-6 to Seirra LeVoy and Aamina Ahmed.

"They're just fighters, they are great girls. They are competitors and just a great group of girls," Yeti head coach Dave Brewton said.

The Yeti ended the season at 8-2 overall counting the playoff loss and finished as the Section Six champions.

Ricci continued her strong freshman campaign with another win, shutting out Nguyen 6-0, 6-0, for her 10th singles win of the season.

Ricci will compete in the D-III state singles tournament as the No. 7 seed. She gets a bye into the second round and will play her match Friday at 7:30 p.m at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

Her coach thinks that she can make a splash at the upcoming tournament.

"With Ana, our No. 1 that's seeded seventh, I think she's going to make people stand up and notice," Brewton said. "As just a freshman, the quality of her play is extraordinary. Even here today the other coach was saying she's the best that they've run across all season. She's going to be a surprise down there. It's going to be fun to watch her down there."

The Knights later won in the No. 2 singles flight, beating Crone 4-6, 6-4, 12-10 in a long three-set battle in which Crone nearly made a comeback in the third set.

Basis again lost in three sets, this time with Derby-Lawson losing 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 to Ahmed. LeVoy got the Yeti a singles win in the fifth flight, beating Currie Hu 6-4, 6-4. Basis lost the No. 6 flight, with Elise Skroki losing 7-5, 6-2.

The Yeti will also send Derby-Lawson and Crone to the D-III doubles state tournament, as the two will take on Heidi Davidson and Alexa Lenhardt from Sabino on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
