A large stump burns in the Coconino National Forest in this file photo.

The Flagstaff Fire Department is conducting a 100-acre controlled burn Wednesday on Observatory Mesa Natural Area.

This is an initial broadcast burn in an area where mechanical forest treatment was conducted a few years ago and an on-going aspect of the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project.
