The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the driver of the wrong-way collision that occurred Saturday, June 1.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials reports that Krista Laine Begay, 26, of Chinle was identified as the driver who caused the collision by driving the wrong way on the eastbound Interstate 40. The collision happened east of Flagstaff.

Authorities said Begay drove her orange Kia sedan westbound and collided head-on with a tan RV. Both vehicles caught fire and completely blocked the eastbound lanes.

The driver of the RV, a 76-year-old man from Pearblossom, Calif. was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center. His condition is unknown, according to authorities.

Begay was pronounced dead on scene.

Last year, there were 15 wrong-way collisions in northern Arizona. Six happened on the I-40 according to statistics from the Arizona Department of Safety.
