Flagstaff city councilmember Jim McCarthy announced on Monday he would be seeking a second term on council.

McCarthy was first elected to council in 2016 and is up for reelection in 2020.

“Guiding a dynamic city like ours takes experience, foresight, and a Flagstaff sense of values,” McCarthy said in a statement. “For three years on Council, I have experienced the complex dynamics of overseeing this wonderful city. Regarding accountability, I am proud of my leadership and my voting record.”

Prior to joining council, McCarthy had served on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for six years and the city’s Water Commission for five years.

McCarthy said in running for reelection, he hopes to continue council action in preparing for the effects of climate change specifically as it effects the forests and the city’s water supply.

McCarthy said he is also concerned about the lack of “reasonably priced housing” in Flagstaff and said it has been frustrating to see the limits the state has placed on cities looking to increase the amount of affordable and change land use.

Looking into the future, McCarthy said he the city needs to manage growth in a thoughtful way that respects neighborhoods. McCarthy also added he treasures Flagstaff’s open spaces.

McCarthy said he believes he has a good working relationship with all the other council members, even when they disagree.

McCarthy has lived in Flagstaff 17 years and is a retired mechanical engineer and has been a member of organizations including Friends of Flagstaff’s Future, and director of the Sierra Club’s state operations.
