This year’s recipient of the Mary Jo Jenkins’ Outstanding Director of the Year award at the city of Flagstaff is Public Works Director Andy Bertelsen according to a press release.
The award is given in honor of the late Mary Jo Jenkins. Jenkins was the management services director for Flagstaff from 1987-2009. Jenkins was known as an exceptional leader with encyclopedic knowledge of the city’s finances.
“Andy exemplifies the traits, work ethic and warm, friendly spirit so memorably demonstrated by Mary Jo during her tenure with the city,” said City Manager Barbara Goodrich.
Bertelsen was selected for his exemplary leadership during the past year, according to the release.
Under his leadership, the city completed construction of a new public works yard, a new climate change action plan was adopted, a rethink solid waste plan was approved and is being implemented, and the aftermath of a large flood event was well managed, the release reads.
“It’s an honor to receive this award,” Bertelsen said. “Mary Jo Jenkins was an exceptional leader and was a mentor and influence early in my career. I am humbled to receive the award named in her memory and fortunate to be able to serve this extraordinary Flagstaff community.”
