blacksmithing

The Arizona Historical Society will hold an advanced blacksmithing workshop at the Pioneer Museum on Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students must have taken an introductory class in blacksmithing at the Pioneer Museum or have proper prior experience.

Students will learn how to identify the suitability of found steel for making tools as well as the process of shaping, heat treating, and tempering the final product. The class will discuss the metallurgy of tool steels and how to identify the approximate hardness of the finished tool. Students will leave with at least one finished tool they can use in their shop. A basic introduction to forging blades and edged tools will also be covered.

Cost is $80 per participant and all tools are provided — pants, long-sleeve shirts, and boots/closed-toe shoes required. Space is limited. Find out more and reserve your spot at arizonahistoricalsociety.org.
