Dance winners

Former Flagstaff resident Darrion Gallegos recently won first place in a national dance competition in New York City.

Gallegos won the Advanced Pro Elite Protege 2011-2012 with the dance convention, The Pulse on Tour. As the Elite Protege winner, Gallegos won a spot in the dance convention tour of 11 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

While on tour, he is assisting world-renowned choreographers Brian Friedman (Britney Spears), Cris Judd (Michael Jackson), Dave Scott (Step Up 3D), Wade Robson (Demi Lovato), Laurieann Gibson (Lady Gaga), Gil Duldulao (Janet Jackson), Tyce Diorio (SYTCD), Desmond Richardson (Complexions), Brooke Lipton (Glee) and Robert Hoffman (You Got Served).

Gallegos is an accomplished dancer in hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, modern and ballet, and has earned many dance awards and scholarships, including an Alvin Ailey, Debbie Reynolds, Monsters of Hip-Hop, and Coastal Dance Rage apprentice scholarship.

In Flagstaff, he taught advanced hip-hop classes and choreographed various dance competition pieces for All That Dance Studio, and the Sinagua High School Varsity Dance Line. He also managed his own dance crew, Young Royalty, who performed for NAU halftime basketball and volleyball games.

Gallegos attended local schools and was actively involved in many aspects of community service, including Empty Bowls and Invisible Children. He created and taught an after-school program named A.M.P. (Arts Mentorship and Performance) at a Flagstaff elementary school to involve underprivileged kids in dance and to help them with academics.

In June 2011, he graduated with honors from Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy, where he was an assistant dance teacher, student council vice president, National Honor Society vice president, a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, and the National Society of High School Scholars. He was named FALA's Outstanding Senior and received its distinguished Leadership Award.

Gallegos currently resides in North Hollywood, Calif., where he is advancing his professional dance career. He has been scouted and signed by Clear Talent Agency.
