After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is hoping to get his life back to some semblance of normalcy. It’s a tough road, and Peter has a lot to contend with. Despite his superhuman abilities, he is still just an awkward kid who struggles to fit in with the world around him. Add in a new interdimensional threat, a trip to Europe and a secret mission from a surly Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and it seems like our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is going to have a jam-packed summer vacation.
Spider-Man is back on the big screen, and he is crushing it yet again. Spider-Man: Far from Home is an archetypal summer hit—fun, excitement, action and a great story all meld into an amazing movie-going experience. As expected, the film looks fantastic, having all the bells and whistles that come with a big-budget action extravaganza. We live in a time when breakneck action and visual splendor are commonplace in big-budget releases. We need something more to make it stand out, and Far from Home delivers. At its core, the film tackles themes that everyone can identify with, the characters are well written and the cast does them justice.
If Spider-Man: Far from Home has a downside, it is that the film is fairly predictable. Not so much so that it comes off as boring, but it’s hard not to feel like Far from Home could have pushed the boundaries of the genre a bit more, especially in light of recent events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this instance, the events of Endgame wind up as the elephant in the room. How will the MCU handle a post-snap story without devaluing all of the hard work it has put into the franchise?
The answer, in this case, is very carefully. Far from Home manages to somehow embrace recent epic MCU events and stand alone on its own merit. It’s the best of both worlds. If you are wondering how things are shaking out after Endgame, this film will serve as a welcome epilogue to that tale. If you couldn’t care less about the cosmic goings on in the MCU but still want to see the continuing adventures of Spider-Man, Far from Home will still fit the bill.
