Hobbs and Shaw

David Leitch (Deadpool 2) brings us Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, a spinoff uniting Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in an effort to save the world from a potentially catastrophic bio-weapon. While devoid of the drag racing that is synonymous with the Fast & Furious series, there are several fast chases, along with a chain of custom vintage trucks linked together in an effort to help Hobbs reel in a helicopter. It all makes for an entertaining entry into the F&F 'verse.

Hobbs, a Diplomatic Security Service agent, and Shaw, a former British elite operative, refuse to work together when they are ordered to do so but are forced into an alliance to save Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) and defeat Brixton (Idris Elba). Along the way, the two unlikely partners sling epic insults back and forth, fighting each other when there is no one else available. While they are adversaries of long-standing, the audience is in no doubt of their inevitable alliance.

The themes of family and loyalty are as prevalent in Hobbs and Shaw as in other F&F movies. Shaw visits his mother and is dedicated to saving his sister despite setbacks; Hobbs has to worry about not only his daughter but also his mother, brothers and his entire extended family as he brings them into the fight.

Hobbs and Shaw provides non-stop action and over-the-top effects. While some of the explosions may be excessive or unlikely, and slow-motion effects are overused, the movie provides what the audience expects from a Fast & Furious spinoff. The action sequences are the star of the film, and while Johnson and Statham are key in the action and hold their own with one-liners (from witty to painful), it is the supporting cast that takes this movie a step above the average high-action flick. Elba is a tortured Terminator-esque villain. Ryan Reynolds is hilarious in his brief appearances as Locke, Hobbs’ handler. The incomparable Helen Mirren is Queenie, Shaw’s mother. Kevin Hart keeps the audience laughing as Air Marshall Dinkley. All together they add to the fun of this action-packed extravaganza.
