Comedians in cars getting coffee

Jerry Seinfeld, after the residual success of Seinfeld, can do whatever he wants now. So he’s doing a show that combines two things he really loves: cars and comedians. Since 2012, Sienfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee gives us those two things, along with plenty of coffee. You could catch this series on the web or on the Crackle channel, but with the release of the 10th season, the whole series moves to Netflix.

The show follows a simple format: Seinfeld introduces us to a classic car and then to his guest, a comedian or comic actor. Some guests get sports cars; some, like Jon Stewart, get a 1978 AMC Gremlin. They then drive around and discuss comedy, tell stories, make jokes and end up at some coffee establishment. The guests run the gamut of old-timers like Carl Reiner or Don Rickles or newer comics like John Mulaney and Trevor Noah. The episodes last about 20 minutes each, and if you’re lucky, you get some good laughs. Sometimes, you just get two comics struggling to find something interesting to say.

Hearing stories about good jokes and bad sets may not be your cup of joe, but if you do enjoy funny people trying to make each other laugh, then this show will work for you. Also, what other show offers a chance to see Carl Reiner join Mel Brooks for dinner in front of the TV? Here’s where Seinfeld shines; you can see his love and respect for these comedy icons. He’s thrilled to be hanging with them. In the latest season, Jerry Lewis appears in one of his last interviews. Seinfeld seems giddy.

The interviews rely on the repartee between Seinfeld and his guest, and sometimes a guest isn’t as funny as you would hope. Sometimes Seinfeld gets too wrapped up in putting forth his own ideas. Sometimes the opinions on the show feel outdated. Face it, Seinfeld can be a bit of a fuddy-duddy. It also feels like a guest and Seinfeld are testing out comedy material with each other. Still, some of that material is comedy gold.

If, like Seinfeld, you’re a car aficionado, and if you like people making each other laugh, then grab a coffee and take a ride with Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
