It's not cool to write up such a negative piece on public charter schools and not explain what they are. A group of parents creates a charter to start a public school that fits a need they have identified in the community. When FALA was created, parents were responding to arts programs being cut. This wasn't some evil plot to take down FUSD. NPA was created to fill a need for college prep. They began in a building near Salsa Brava that was a pawn shop. Non profit charter schools function under the rules the state laid out; there's no funding for transportation or school lunch given to charters. Still, there is a city bus stop in front of schools like NPA, and kid's parents bring them to school from places as far away as Williams and the Verde Valley since the boundaries are set as the entire state. If FUSD and other large districts managed their money better, then people would see an improvement in education and less of a need for charters. In the years I have lived here, there have been multiple accounting errors in FUSD. One of them was around a million dollars. Just take a look at their multistory admin building to see where their money goes. For profit charters like BASIS should be illegal, but please don't tell me that well run education nonprofits are ruining education. They were responding to a system that was already broke .
