If you are shopping for a home mortgage, I would encourage you to look no farther than some of our many local mortgage companies and brokers in Flagstaff. All the lenders that I interact in Flagstaff have rates and fees that are competitive with the large national lending companies.

There are many large mortgage companies who tout their programs on television and online. Most make claims about how efficient they are and how you can get prequalified with one phone call. Many have gimmicks that seek to draw you in to get you to submit a loan application. As I always say the devil is in the details. Take a hard look at what you are getting into and remember that the people at the other end of the line only have their company’s interest and profit in mind.

A number of years ago the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce began promoting a saying “Shop Local”. This idea was to get residents to spend money in our community to help the local economy and to bring in tax dollars to help our city’s finances. When I am asked about mortgage company’s, I always suggest to buyers that they seek out a local lender.

Using a local lender makes sense in many ways. With a local lender you can pick up the phone and talk, or go into his or her office for a consultation on the loan process. They can sit down with you and discuss rates, fees, and other costs as well how the appraisal process works. No toll-free number with a 10-digit extension where you always get a message that the person is on another line or away from their desk. I have been in this business for many years and invariably when I have issues with a closing it is because the buyers used an out-of-town lender or escrow company.

When you go looking for a lender remember the Chamber slogan and “Shop Local”. Without exception, I find that our local mortgage lenders will have your best interest in mind and will work diligently to find you a loan that fits your needs and meets your expectations.
