Conveniently located just outside the Flagstaff Mall’s newest major tenant, Acapulco Tropical is there to offer a wide variety of healthy options following a workout.
With a variety of therapy juices on the menu in addition to other options that include different kinds of fresh fruit, the mall’s newest addition also offers plenty of Mexican-inspired snacks and treats. The selection comes naturally to Marisol Serrano, who has long enjoyed working with these types of food.
“I like to work a lot with fruits, and everything natural or organic,” Serrano said. “In Mexico, we had fruit stores. From Acapulco, the place where I was born, it’s a tropical place. Coconuts were the first fruit I knew in my life.”
Aptly named Acapulco Tropical for Serrano’s birthplace and its multitude of menu options, the stand is a family effort. Along with a few others, Serrano runs the business with the help of her children, Amy and Jason Tellez.
“It’s a lot of fun. We are always laughing,” Amy Tellez said. “We always have our music in the back, we are always dancing because like in Acapulco where she’s from, we always have our Cumbia music.”

Serrano said she had long desired the chance to open up her own space, with the family trying for the past few years to find a spot. While the food court did not work out, the opposite end of the mall between JCPenney and Planet Fitness proved to be a good option.
The family needed to bring in fridges and cabinets to get the location set up, in addition to creating its signs, which took about two weeks before opening back on Black Friday. And with Planet Fitness now taking up a substantial portion of the mall, Acapulco Tropical’s location just inside the mall’s entrance and just across from gym’s front doors is an ideal scenario.
“We actually do see a lot of Planet Fitness come over to get the therapy juices,” Tellez said. “Most of the therapy juices are from (Serrano). She likes to study a lot of fruits and vegetables, and all of the properties that they have. So she knows a lot about that, so all the therapy juices are up there from her and what she thinks is healthy.”
The multiple different kinds of juice come in flavors including a mix of fruits and vegetables, offering different types of benefits. And while the juices may be something Serrano enjoys working with, the house special at Acapulco Tropical is also something worth trying out.
Called the Acapulco Tropimoothie, the smoothie includes a variety of flavors and is a favorite of customers so far. With some of the ingredients hard to come by in Flagstaff, the family has been to Phoenix every few weeks to stock up in order to offer its house special as well as its other snacks including tosti-locos, elotes and ceviche.
While much of the menu offers customers a healthy option in the middle of the day, other sweet options include fresas con crema and pan dulce.
