Northern Arizona's Andy Trouard clocked the second-fastest 3000-meter time in the nation, and Paige Gilchrist posted the 12th-best mark in the country and the school record in the 5000m as the track and field program competed at the opening days of both the Iowa State Classic and New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational on Friday.
Brooke Andersen set a personal best, a new NAU school record and the best mark ever recorded in the Big Sky Conference with a toss of 21.95m in the weight throw that took second at the Don Kirby Invite. It was the seventh-best mark recorded in the nation.
Another NAU standout was Matt Baxter, who finished just behind Trouard with a PR of 7:53.37 in the men's 3000m -- sits as the tenth-best time in the country.
Blaise Ferro also ran the 22nd-fastest time in the nation in the men's 5000m (13:51.28) in a stacked field against some of the top athletes in the country.
Jasmine Malone ran a time of 23.80 in the women's 200m at Don Kirby to set a new personal best and place second all-time in NAU history.
Overall, NAU athletes set two school records and 18 new PRs at the two events.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action with another day full day of competition at both locations. Northern Arizona will start competition at the Don Kirby at 10 a.m. and the Iowa State Classic at 11:35 p.m.
Concluding a stretch of three straight road games, the women's basketball team faces Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. tipoff. The Lumberjacks and Thunderbirds are both looking to end lengthy losing streaks, with NAU's at eight games and Southern Utah having lost its last six.
The Lumberjacks' losing streak moved to eight with a 76-59 loss to Idaho State and 77-63 loss to Weber State last week on the road. NAU is 4-18 overall and 1-10 in the Big Sky with four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Olivia Lucero ranks 10th in the Big Sky with 15.9 points per game and is third with 4.6 assists per game, both of which lead the Lumberjacks. Over her past four games, Lucero has averaged 18.0 points per game while significantly increasing her rebounding output with an average of 8.0. Redshirt senior Kenna McDavis, NAU's second-leading scorer at 15.3 points per game, has hit 59 three-pointers this season and is currently sitting seventh on the program's single season chart.
The Lumberjacks are also receiving double-digit scoring from junior Kaleigh Paplow, who is averaging 10.7 points per game this season. Paplow is also averaging 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
Southern Utah has dropped six consecutive games since defeating NAU on Jan. 13 and is 3-19 overall and 2-9 in conference. Last week, the Thunderbirds lost to Weber State, 65-50, and Idaho State, 66-39, on the road. Breanu Reid is the only Thunderbird averaging double-figure points with a team-leading 11.5 per game. In conference play, she is averaging 11.9 points per game. Rebecca Cardenas is averaging 4.0 assists per game and is second in the conference with 2.8 steals per game.
