With the Big Sky Conference preseason polls released Thursday, both of Northern Arizona's tennis teams were picked to finish second in the conference.
The women's tennis team garnered two consecutive regular-season championship titles in 2016 and '17, with head coach Maciej Bogusz and the Lumberjacks reviving two first-place votes and a total of 112 points. Meanwhile, Ki Kroll and the men's team received two first-place votes and a total of 111 points. Both teams trailed only the Idaho Vandals by eight points, with the men earning 117 points and nine first-place votes and the women at 120 points and 10 first-place votes.
The women are coming off one of the best seasons in program history, finishing the 2017 campaign with a perfect 11-0 mark in the Big Sky and recording an 18-5 overall record.
The Lumberjacks will return four players to the roster in sophomores Chiara Tomasetti and Brandy Walker, and juniors Eirene Granville and Hanneke Lodewijks. In addition, four newcomers in Worthy Goldman, Ellie Millard, Madi Moore and Cora-Lynn von Dungern are set to join the program.
The Lumberjacks squad finished fall competition with half picking up national rankings in doubles. Tomasetti and Lodewijks are currently tied at No. 53 and close behind is Granville and Walker at No. 56. The four are listed in the Oracle ITA Division I women's doubles rankings, announced in November.
On the men's side, the Lumberjacks clinched the regular-season championship for the first time since 1982 after going 10-1 in conference and 15-7 overall to go with an undefeated 7-0 home record. The Lumberjacks return 10 to the roster and add newcomer Chris Steele, a Phoenix native.
Northern Arizona's women will start competition at Arizona State on Jan. 20, and the men start competition at New Mexico a week later on Jan. 27.
