Scoring triple-digits at the Division III state meet, the Northland Prep Spartans placed their girls team fifth and boys team sixth Saturday afternoon at Phoenix Country Day School’s Dady Aquatic Center in Paradise Valley.

Flagstaff’s girls earned a 14th-place finish in the Division II meet at Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, while Basis Flagstaff’s girls took 15th alongside Northland Prep in the D-III meet.

The Spartan girls best finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Aurelia Umholtz, Amelie Umholtz, Sarah Komadina and Hannah Penado finished second overall. A similar group, with Jillian Raab replacing Komadina, also took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Aurelia Umholtz and Penado added a pair of scoring performances in individual races as well. Umholtz finsihed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, one place ahead of sixth-place Penado, and added fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

Penado tied for fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, with diver Emerson Quigley’s fourth-place finish on the 1-meter board helping the team to its 144.5 points.

On the boys side, the Spartans 127.5 points came through similar means. Eric Heinonen, Justin Jarmer, Austin Kwan and Harrison Howie combined for a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. With Greg Pappas subbing for Kwan in the 400-yard freestyle, a similar group took another sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Heinonen also scored a 10th-place in the 200-yard freestyle and a sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, with Jarmer also adding to individual scores with a 10th in the 200-yard IM and a sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Howie took seventh in the 100-yard freestyle and diver Marcus Marquardt scored Northland Prep’s best finish with a fourth-place finish on the 1-meter board.

Swimming at the same meet, Basis Flagstaff also scored in a pair of relays. Ally Montgomery, Abigael Conn, Alexandra Henes and Maille Conn took 12th in the 200-yard medley relay and eighth in the 400-yard freestyle.

Abigael Conn also finished seventh (500-yard) and eighth (200-yard) in a pair of freestyle races.

Flagstaff’s divers aided their point total, with Margaret Horton finishing third in the 1-meter followed by Kayla Huffman in eighth.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hannah Doskicz, Rachel Diehl, Madi Boose and Meadow Higgins combined for a 12th-place finish.

On the boys side, Thomas Wesche finished 10th on the 1-meter board while Ryan Wendel took ninth in the 100-yard butterfly.
